Tackle Bad Smells Head On

With more than 5,000 gallons of air passing through your nose each day1 your brain is bombarded with an array of smells – and not all of them pleasant. Out of the 10,000 different scents, our noses can pick up, there are going to be those that we would rather not encounter, especially on a daily basis.2

The brain has a natural filter to adapt to smells which are constantly around us, allowing us to focus on new and unique smells that could present a potential threat. This is also known as sensory adaptation.3 It can lead to homes growing increasingly smelly, as lingering odors go unnoticed. From smelly pets to stinky feet, there can be many reasons why bad odors linger around the home; read on to discover some Air Wick® odor control tips.

Top Tips to Help Remove Bad Odors from Your Home

  • Get Some Fresh Air

Open up the windows once in a while! There is no right amount of fresh air we should get each day, but ideally, you should be airing your home out daily for at least five minutes to improve the air quality. Humid and stale air is considered ‘heavy’ and can be particularly bad for family members with asthma and other allergies, as it harbors fungi, mold and dust mites4.

Bathrooms and kitchens are usually contribute the most to humidity in the home5 Dampness can cause mold, mildew and musty smells. Make sure you keep the fan running or the window cracked for about 30 minutes after steamy showers. Prolonged humidity can damage your home through the spread of mold,6 so consider installing ventilation and keep a look out for signs of mold, as this will save time and money in the long run.

  • Manage Your Trash

Downgrade to a smaller trash can and take it out more frequently! If the baby's diaper pail or cat's litter box is causing problems try Air Wick® Stick Ups for small spaces. Placed inside the lid of a trash pail or on the side of a litter box, these little wonders can help keep air smelling fresh.

  • Do The Laundry

If the scent of last week’s socks are creeping out of the laundry basket, but you don't have time to do laundry, Air Wick® Pure™ room spray can help. Ease the work load by removing and replacing bad odors with the scent that best reflects your mood. Pay close attention to your sheets and towels. If you wash these items once a month, that simply will not do. Fabric holds onto smells easily, so aim to wash sheets weekly.

  • Control Bad Pet Smells

From the basement to the yard, pets are likely to cause a problem wherever they step. And as with all bad smells, our brains can adapt to treat lingering pet smells around the home as the norm, which can prove embarrassing when guests come over. Finding the source of the bad odors can be difficult, but with the right tools even the slightest trace of a smelly pet can be found and cleaned up.

With an inexpensive black light (found in most home improvement stores for a reasonable price), you can spot traces of urine that show up under the florescent lighting. Just make sure the room is dark when the UV black light is shining for best results. You can read our full list of tips on how to keep pet smells under control here.

  • Freshen Up

Our olfactory system, which senses odors, is important in our daily life.7 Not only can it help evoke powerful memories, but it can also have the ability to affect our mood.8 Make a habit of lighting an Air Wick® scented candle or using an Air Wick® Room Spray after you finish cleaning a room – nothing feels better than sitting back after a round of dusting or mopping and taking a breath of a scent you love! Use Air Wick® automatic sprays or scented oil near problem areas like shoe storage, basements, laundry rooms and more for continuous fragrance.

What's your favorite spot to sit and relax with a book or a cup of tea? Put an Air Wick® scented oil warmer nearby to make your cozy space even more relaxing. The continuous fragrance of a scented oil will help ensure that your favorite spot smells great. Use Air Wick® Pure Instant Sprays to deliver fragrance wherever and whenever you need it around the home.
